Factoring in Iowa

The Iowa Economic Development Authority describes the state's economy as driven by three key industries: advanced manufacturing, biosciences, and finance and insurance. Agriculture runs underneath all of them, supplying raw material for processing plants and customers for equipment makers.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Economy at a Glance table for September 2026 (preliminary) shows about 213,400 manufacturing jobs, a large figure for a state of Iowa's size, alongside roughly 303,700 in trade, transportation and utilities and about 105,800 in financial activities. Government accounts for about 269,900 jobs and construction around 87,900.

Manufacturing receivables come from agricultural and construction equipment plants, appliance and window makers, and food and ethanol processors. Their suppliers, machine shops, fabricators, packaging vendors and maintenance contractors, typically wait 30 to 60 days or longer. See our manufacturing factoring page for how factors look at those invoices.

Agriculture and transportation are tightly linked. Grain and livestock haulers, custom harvesters, seed and input dealers and the trucking companies moving product to processors and river terminals all deal with seasonal cash swings. Our pages on agriculture factoring and freight and trucking factoring cover those cases.

The biosciences cluster adds animal health, renewable fuels and crop science companies. Insurers and financial firms in Des Moines create demand for IT contractors, call-center staffing and professional services vendors billing on enterprise terms.

UCC filings in Iowa

UCC financing statements for most business collateral are filed with the Iowa Secretary of State. Its UCC page is the starting point, and the office runs filings through its Fast Track Filing system. We could not load the office's pages directly when preparing this article, so confirm current filing fees and search procedures there. Liens tied to real estate, such as fixture filings, are recorded with county recorders rather than the Secretary of State.

Your factor will file a UCC-1 naming your business as debtor and describing the accounts it purchases. Article 9 requires that filing to perfect a sale of accounts against third parties, so it is what protects the factor's ownership of your invoices from competing creditors and in bankruptcy.

Before signing, search your exact legal entity name. In agriculture-heavy businesses it is common to find an operating lender with a blanket lien on crops, livestock, accounts and equipment. A factor will usually need that lender to release the receivables or sign an intercreditor agreement, and asking early can save weeks.

Iowa law notes

Factoring is generally structured as a purchase of receivables rather than a loan. Courts considering whether a particular deal is a true sale usually weigh recourse terms and whether the seller still carries the credit risk.

Iowa codifies Article 9 in Chapter 554 of the Iowa Code. Iowa Code § 554.9406 addresses discharge of the account debtor, notification of assignment and restrictions on assignment. Under that section, contract language between your customer and your business is ineffective to the extent it prohibits, restricts or requires the customer's consent to assigning an account. That generally prevents a customer's no-assignment clause from blocking factoring, subject to the exceptions in the section.

No Iowa-specific commercial financing disclosure statute covering factoring was identified as of November 2026.

This is general information, not legal advice.

Major metro areas

Des Moines and its suburbs are the insurance and financial services center, with state government, data centers, construction and distribution along Interstates 35 and 80.

Cedar Rapids and Iowa City combine food and grain processing, avionics and communications manufacturing, and university and hospital spending.

The Quad Cities, shared with Illinois, are anchored by agricultural equipment manufacturing and Mississippi River logistics.

Waterloo and Cedar Falls add tractor and engine production and meat processing.

Sioux City and Council Bluffs on the western edge mix meatpacking, agribusiness, rail and trucking tied to the Omaha market.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Iowa grain hauler factor its invoices?

Yes. Haulers paid by elevators, processors or co-ops on delayed terms often factor individual loads with scale tickets and bills of lading as support. Factors will check the payer's credit and how quickly disputes over weight or grade are resolved. Compare costs with the factoring calculator.

My farm lender has a blanket lien. Can I still factor?

Possibly, but the lender has to agree. Most factors require a release of the receivables you plan to sell or an intercreditor agreement setting out who gets paid from what. Talk with your lender first, and use our factoring vs. line of credit guide to compare the two options.

Where do I search for Iowa UCC filings?

Start with the Iowa Secretary of State's UCC page and its online filing system, searching on your exact legal name and any former names. If the collateral could include fixtures or other real-estate-related items, also check the county recorder where the property sits.
