The Kansas Department of Commerce lists its key industries as advanced manufacturing, corporate and professional services, logistics and distribution, food processing and manufacturing, aerospace and defense, animal health, bioscience, agriculture, and energy and natural resources. Recent announcements on the department's site include the opening of an electric-vehicle battery plant in De Soto and an investment to manufacture air traffic radars in the state.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Economy at a Glance table for September 2026 (preliminary) shows about 272,100 jobs in trade, transportation and utilities, 221,800 in education and health services, 175,800 in professional and business services and roughly 173,500 in manufacturing. Mining and logging, a category that includes oil and gas extraction, adds about 6,000.
Aerospace is the signature factoring market around Wichita, where aircraft and aerostructures production supports a large network of machine shops, composite fabricators, tooling vendors and engineering contractors. Those suppliers wait on long payment cycles from large manufacturers, and production rate changes can swing their cash needs quickly. Our manufacturing factoring page covers how factors handle aerospace purchase orders.
Food processing and agriculture are the other pillar. Meatpacking plants in southwest Kansas, flour mills and grain elevators rely on haulers, maintenance contractors and input suppliers. Kansas City's suburbs on the Kansas side hold major distribution centers and rail facilities, giving carriers and brokers steady volume; see freight and trucking factoring. Oilfield service firms in central and western Kansas round out the list.
UCC financing statements are filed with the Kansas Secretary of State. Its UCC filing information page explains that a subscription is required to file and search Kansas UCCs online, and that the account administrator receives login instructions generally within two to three business days after applying.
The page lists online fees of $10 for a UCC-1 financing statement, $10 for a UCC-3 amendment and $10 for a UCCII debtor search, each plus $1 per page after the first 10 pages, with transmitting utility filings at $50. Paper filings cost $20 for a UCC-1, a UCC-3 or a UCCII search, again plus $1 per page after the tenth. Agricultural production input liens (UCC4) must be submitted on paper with a UCC-1.
A factor buying your receivables will file a UCC-1 describing the accounts it purchases. Article 9 requires that filing to perfect the factor's interest against other creditors and in bankruptcy. Before you sign, run a debtor search on your exact legal name. Farm and ranch operations, in particular, often carry blanket liens from operating lenders that a factor will need released or subordinated.
Factoring is generally structured as a purchase of receivables rather than a loan, and Kansas has written that principle into its disclosure law. The Commercial Financing Disclosure Act, enacted as 2024 Senate Bill 345 (2024 Session Laws, Chapter 29) and approved April 12, 2024, defines an accounts receivable purchase transaction as a sale of a business's accounts or payment intangibles at a discount, and provides that a provider's characterization of such a transaction as a purchase is conclusive that it is not a loan.
The act treats accounts receivable purchase transactions as commercial financing transactions and requires covered providers to give disclosures. A provider is someone who consummates more than five commercial financing transactions with Kansas businesses in a calendar year, and the act exempts transactions over $500,000 along with other listed categories. Enforcement authority rests exclusively with the attorney general.
Kansas codifies Article 9 in Chapter 84. K.S.A. 84-9-406 provides that a term in an agreement between an account debtor and an assignor is ineffective to the extent it prohibits, restricts or requires consent to the assignment of an account, which generally keeps customer anti-assignment clauses from blocking factoring.
This is general information, not legal advice.
Wichita is the aviation manufacturing center, with a deep supplier base, healthcare systems and agricultural processing.
The Kansas side of the Kansas City metro, including Overland Park, Olathe and Lenexa, combines corporate offices, distribution centers, rail and intermodal facilities and the new battery manufacturing in De Soto.
Topeka adds state government, food manufacturing and rail operations.
Lawrence and Manhattan pair universities with animal health and bioscience research.
Garden City, Dodge City and Liberal in southwest Kansas are meatpacking, feedlot and grain centers with heavy truck traffic.
It covers accounts receivable purchase transactions, which is how factoring is defined in the act, when the provider does more than five Kansas transactions a year and the deal is $500,000 or less, unless another exemption applies. Ask your factor for the disclosure before signing. The attorney general enforces the act.
The Secretary of State lists $10 for an online UCC-1 and $20 on paper, each plus $1 per page beyond 10 pages. Online filing and searching require a subscription account. In most factoring deals the factor pays the filing fee, though some pass it through, so check the fee schedule.
Generally yes. K.S.A. 84-9-406 limits the effect of anti-assignment clauses, and factors familiar with aerospace will review purchase orders, quality acceptance and the buyer's payment history.
