Over the past few decades South Carolina has built a manufacturing economy around vehicle assembly, tires, aircraft and the hundreds of suppliers those plants rely on. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Economy at a Glance table puts manufacturing employment at about 266,200 in September 2026 (preliminary). Tier-two and tier-three suppliers, from metal stampers to logistics packagers, generally invoice large customers on long terms while paying their own workforce weekly. That mismatch is the classic reason suppliers turn to automotive factoring or general manufacturing factoring.
The Port of Charleston, together with inland rail ports that move containers to the Upstate, ties those plants to global supply chains. Trade, transportation and utilities employs roughly 446,400 South Carolinians, and drayage carriers, warehouse operators and freight forwarders all bill businesses that take weeks to pay. Port drayage trucking is a frequent factoring use case because chassis fees, fuel and driver pay are due immediately.
Professional and business services, about 321,900 jobs, includes the staffing agencies that supply production and warehouse labor across the I-85 corridor. Construction adds roughly 130,200 jobs, much of it industrial and residential building tied to population growth along the coast and in the Upstate. Staffing agencies in particular use staffing factoring to cover weekly payroll on client invoices that pay weeks later.
The South Carolina Secretary of State is the central filing office for financing statements, according to its Uniform Commercial Code page. The public can search the office's UCC Electronic Filing, Search & Retrieval system for financing statements and collateral information, and the page links to online filing and search. A UCC-11 form is available for asking the office to perform a search on a debtor or secured party name, with additional fees for copies. The page also publishes a fee schedule for UCC-1, UCC-3 and UCC-5 filings.
A factor files a UCC-1 because Article 9 applies to sales of accounts. The financing statement gives public notice that the factor owns the invoices it bought and sets its priority against later lenders and against a bankruptcy trustee.
Search the online system for your exact legal name before you sign. Suppliers that financed equipment or took a bank line to land a large plant contract often have filings covering accounts or all assets, and the new factor will need those released or subordinated.
Factoring is generally treated as a sale of receivables for a discounted price, not a loan. The label in the contract is not the whole story: courts may weigh who bears the risk that the customer never pays.
South Carolina enacted Article 9 as Chapter 9 of Title 36 of the Code of Laws. S.C. Code § 36-9-406 tracks UCC 9-406. Once an account debtor is notified of the assignment, it must pay the assignee to discharge its obligation, and a term in an agreement between an account debtor and an assignor is ineffective to the extent it prohibits, restricts or requires consent to assignment. For a plant supplier, that means a purchase-order clause forbidding assignment of receivables usually will not prevent a sale to a factor.
No state-specific disclosure statute was identified as of November 2026 for commercial financing or factoring in South Carolina.
This is general information, not legal advice.
Greenville-Spartanburg anchors the Upstate manufacturing belt along Interstate 85, with vehicle assembly, tire production, advanced materials and a deep supplier base fed by an inland rail port.
Charleston combines container shipping, aircraft assembly, defense installations and a growing technology and services sector.
Columbia is the state capital with government, insurance, healthcare and distribution operations at the junction of three interstates.
Rock Hill and the York County suburbs of Charlotte add logistics and light manufacturing, while Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand are driven by construction and hospitality services.
Yes, as long as the forwarder or shipper is creditworthy and the paperwork is clean. Factors look for signed delivery receipts, rate confirmations and proof of insurance. Accessorial charges such as chassis or detention fees should be billed and documented separately, since they are the items most often disputed.
Search the Secretary of State's UCC Electronic Filing, Search & Retrieval system using your exact legal name. For a search performed by the office itself, submit a UCC-11 request. Review any filing that lists accounts, receivables or all assets before you sign a factoring agreement.
Non-recourse costs more but shifts some credit risk to the factor, usually only for a customer's insolvency. With a large, financially strong customer, many suppliers choose recourse to save on fees. Our guide to recourse versus non-recourse factoring explains what each actually covers.
