Factoring in Illinois

Illinois is a freight state first. Chicago is where the major eastern and western railroads meet, and the surrounding counties hold intermodal yards, distribution parks and some of the densest trucking activity in the country. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Economy at a Glance table for September 2026 (preliminary) puts trade, transportation and utilities at about 1,214,300 jobs, the largest private category in the state.

That network supports an enormous population of carriers, brokers and warehouse operators that invoice shippers on 30- to 60-day terms. Drayage companies hauling containers between rail ramps and warehouses, and owner-operators running loads out of the Chicago market, are core factoring customers; see freight and trucking factoring and warehousing factoring.

Manufacturing remains substantial, at roughly 571,100 jobs in the same BLS table. Machinery, metal fabrication, food processing and chemicals plants buy from a long chain of smaller suppliers who wait on purchase-order terms. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity runs an Advancing Innovative Manufacturing program, which signals how central production remains to the state's economy. Our manufacturing factoring page explains how factors evaluate those receivables.

Professional and business services, at about 907,400 jobs, includes the staffing agencies that place workers in warehouses and plants, often paying weekly while clients pay monthly. Downstate, agriculture and agribusiness add grain handlers, input suppliers and haulers.

Factors based in Illinois

Seven listed factors are headquartered in Illinois, all in the Chicago area, and four of them are freight specialists serving the region's carriers and intermodal drayage operators. Saint John Capital in Chicago advertises 100% advances with no reserve and same-day payment when the bill of lading is uploaded by noon Eastern. Capital Depot in Des Plaines publishes advances up to 97% with no reserves and support in more than 15 languages. TRU Funding in Burr Ridge offers same-day processing any day of the year with rates set by volume, and Pro Funding in Alsip advertises non-recourse factoring. None of the four publishes its factoring rate. J D Factors in West Chicago, DSA Factors and Purchase Order Financing in Chicago are listed without verified terms. The comparison table below adds the national factors that fund Illinois businesses.

UCC filings in Illinois

UCC financing statements for most business collateral are filed with the Uniform Commercial Code Division of the Illinois Secretary of State, part of its Department of Business Services. The office's UCC page is the starting point for filing and searching. We could not load the office's pages directly when preparing this article, so confirm current fees, filing methods and search options there.

Here is the practical point. When you sell invoices, the factor files a UCC-1 naming your company as debtor and describing accounts. Article 9 requires that filing to perfect the factor's purchase against other creditors, including a bankruptcy trustee. It will appear whenever a lender or another factor searches your name.

Before you sign, search your exact legal entity name. A clean business-entity record says nothing about liens, so make sure you are running a UCC search, not just a company lookup. Look for filings covering accounts, receivables or all assets, and expect a new factor to require their release or subordination.

Illinois law notes

Factoring is generally structured as a purchase of receivables rather than a loan. Courts evaluating whether an arrangement is really a sale tend to look past the title to recourse terms, repurchase obligations and who bears the risk that a customer never pays.

Illinois has adopted revised UCC Article 9, including the provision based on UCC 9-406. Under that rule, once your customer receives notice of the assignment it generally must pay the factor, and contract terms that prohibit or restrict assignment of an account are generally ineffective. That is why a no-assignment clause in a shipper's or manufacturer's terms usually does not prevent factoring.

No Illinois-specific commercial financing disclosure statute covering factoring was identified as of November 2026.

This is general information, not legal advice.

Major metro areas

Chicago and its suburbs dominate: rail and intermodal hubs, O'Hare air cargo, food processing, manufacturing, financial services and a very large staffing and professional services market.

Joliet and Will County, southwest of Chicago, hold some of the largest concentrations of distribution centers and intermodal terminals in the Midwest.

Rockford is a manufacturing city with aerospace components, machining and tool-making suppliers.

Peoria and Bloomington-Normal combine heavy equipment manufacturing, insurance and agriculture.

The Metro East near St. Louis, Springfield and Champaign-Urbana add river logistics, state government, university research and agribusiness.

Frequently asked questions

How do Chicago-area carriers use factoring?

Most factor loads one at a time: submit the rate confirmation and signed proof of delivery, receive an advance quickly, and let the factor collect from the broker or shipper. Many freight factors also check broker credit before you accept a load. Use the factoring calculator to compare offers on the same basis.

Is a business entity search enough to check for liens in Illinois?

No. A business entity search confirms that your company exists and is in good standing, but it does not show financing statements. You need a UCC search on your exact legal name. Many factors also check for federal and state tax liens, which can take priority over receivables.

Should an Illinois staffing agency choose recourse or non-recourse factoring?

It depends on your client mix. Non-recourse protects you if a client becomes insolvent but usually costs more and still leaves you responsible for billing disputes. Recourse is cheaper if your clients are creditworthy. Our recourse vs. non-recourse guide walks through the trade-offs.
