Factoring in Indiana

Few states depend on production as much as Indiana. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Economy at a Glance table for September 2026 (preliminary) shows about 520,800 manufacturing jobs, close to the 637,000 in trade, transportation and utilities and nearly equal to the 534,000 in education and health services. In many states manufacturing is a fraction of the services sector; here it is one of the largest categories.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation's industry focus matches that profile: mobility, life sciences, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, agbioscience and defense. Vehicle and engine plants, recreational vehicle manufacturers in the north, steel mills along Lake Michigan, and pharmaceutical and medical-device makers all depend on networks of smaller suppliers. Those suppliers buy materials and run shifts long before customers pay, which is the gap factoring fills. Our manufacturing factoring page and automotive factoring page cover how factors evaluate production invoices.

Logistics is the second engine. Indianapolis and the interstate network around it host large distribution centers and air cargo operations, generating receivables for carriers, freight brokers and warehouse operators; see freight and trucking factoring. Staffing agencies supplying labor to plants and warehouses, at the heart of the roughly 357,800 professional and business services jobs in the BLS table, are frequent factoring clients because payroll runs weekly. Federal contracting tied to the state's defense facilities adds another pool.

UCC filings in Indiana

UCC financing statements are filed with the Indiana Secretary of State, whose Business Services Division lists UCC among its services and links to online filing and searching through INBiz, the state's business portal. The INBiz UCC filings and searches page is the entry point for both, and the Secretary of State's business page includes a direct "File UCC" link. Check INBiz for current fees before filing.

When you sell receivables, the factor files a UCC-1 naming your company as debtor and describing accounts. Article 9 requires that filing to perfect the factor's purchase, which protects it against your other creditors and a bankruptcy trustee. Anyone who searches your name afterward will see it.

Search first. Look up your exact legal entity name in the INBiz UCC search and review any financing statement that covers accounts, receivables, inventory or all assets. In supplier-heavy industries it is common to find an equipment lender or a customer-sponsored supply-chain finance program already on file; both need to be sorted out before a factor will fund.

Indiana law notes

Factoring is generally structured as a purchase of receivables rather than a loan. Courts that look at whether a deal is a true sale tend to focus on recourse, repurchase rights and whether credit risk actually passed to the factor.

Indiana has adopted revised UCC Article 9, including the provision based on UCC 9-406 that generally makes contract terms forbidding or restricting the assignment of accounts ineffective. For a parts supplier, that means a no-assignment clause buried in an automaker's purchase terms usually does not prevent factoring, though a factor will still review the customer's notification and payment requirements.

No Indiana-specific commercial financing disclosure statute covering factoring was identified as of November 2026.

This is general information, not legal advice.

Major metro areas

Indianapolis is the state's largest market, with pharmaceutical and life-sciences companies, a major air cargo hub, distribution centers, motorsports suppliers and state government.

Fort Wayne combines vehicle and component manufacturing, defense electronics and insurance.

Elkhart and South Bend in the north are the center of recreational vehicle production, with a dense base of suppliers selling to RV makers.

Northwest Indiana, including Gary and Hammond, is a steel and heavy industry region tied to the Chicago freight market.

Evansville in the southwest adds plastics, vehicle assembly suppliers, and river and rail logistics.

Frequently asked questions

Do Indiana RV suppliers use factoring?

Many do, because RV production is cyclical and suppliers must buy material ahead of manufacturer orders. Factors look at the manufacturer's payment history and any history of returned or rejected parts. During slow periods, check whether your agreement has minimum volume requirements that could trigger fees.

Where do I file and search UCC records in Indiana?

Through INBiz, the Indiana Secretary of State's online business portal, which handles UCC filings and searches. Your factor will typically file the UCC-1, but you can run a search on your exact legal name, and any former names, beforehand to spot existing liens.

How does a factor handle an Indiana customer that offers its own early-pay program?

Some large manufacturers run supply-chain finance programs that pay suppliers early at a discount. Those programs and an outside factor can conflict if both claim the same invoices. Compare the program's rate with factoring quotes using the factoring calculator and disclose the program to any factor you talk to.
